GLT welcomes new Volunteer Coordinator

09-05-2013

Hello Greenways members and volunteers!

My name is Cynthia Bendickson, and I have just started with Greenways in the brand new role of Volunteer Coordinator.

I’m writing to introduce myself and also to let you know about some of the excellent Greenways events coming up soon that you can get involved with!  I will be working for Greenways for two days per week from now until October, and I look forward to meeting all of you at some point during my time here.

Just a bit about me – I grew up in Campbell River and on Hardwicke Island, graduated from UBC with a B.Sc. in Agroecology, and then spent 5 years in the UK working in local government promoting biodiversity conservation and working with several volunteer groups to take action on the ground and enhance the local community.  I moved back to Campbell River recently, and I have been keeping very busy organizing the Haig-Brown Festival, as well as spending time volunteering with Greenways, the CR Museum, and several other organizations and projects.

So, now on to the exciting parts – our upcoming events!  We have several events in the next few weeks that are looking for volunteers, including:

1.  Discovery Passage Aquarium – May 23, 2013 from 4-6pm; May 26,2013 from 9-2pm; and ongoing

The Aquarium is starting construction next week, and they will be needing volunteers for painting, building exhibits, and generally helping out.  They are holding two work days in late May, and in addition, they are also looking for volunteers on an ongoing basis once everything is up and running to help with interpretation, administration, greeters, etc.

2.  The Tim Hortons/Greenways Annual Campbell River Broom Bash – May 25, 10am-12pm on the Raven Trail

Spring has sprung in a big way, and the broom is blooming, so now is the best time to be cutting broom to keep it under control.  This is always a big event, and Timmies will be providing coffee and timbits!  What more do you need?  Wear a sturdy pair of shoes and sensible clothes – gloves and cutting equipment is provided.  Lots of fun, fresh air and exercise.  Further details will be coming soon.

3.  The Beaver Lodge Forest Lands 20th Anniversary Celebration – June 1, 2013 at North Island College/Timberline

Did you know that The Beaver Lodge Forest Lands is the first BC experimental forest protected under its own legislation?  Bill 52, the Beaver Lodge Forest Trust Renewal Act, protects the land solely for ‘experimental work in reforestation and forest management’, and this year is the 20th Anniversary of the Act.  The Beaver Lodge Lands Committee is organizing a celebration with guided walks, speakers, a BBQ, music, contests (with great prizes) and more.  Volunteers are needed to act as ‘rear-guards’ on the tours to make sure that no one is left behind, as well as for set-up/take-down (setting up tables and chairs, etc), and parking attendants.  See the attached poster for more information.

4.  Ocean’s Day 2013 – June 8, 2013 at the Maritime Heritage Centre

Ocean’s Day celebrates our living ocean and all of the creatures that inhabit it.  This popular annual event has been held since 2002, with participants this year including the Maritime Heritage Centre, Bravehearts Dragonboat Team, CR Whale Watching, DFO, Quinsam River Hatchery and many more.  Also featured this year will be the Grand Opening of the Discovery Passage Aquarium!  Volunteers are needed on the day for set-up/take-down, parking/traffic control and greeters.

If you can help with any of these events, please contact me for more information. Email volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca

Volunteering is at the heart of Greenways Land Trust, and we really do appreciate your time in helping to make our community a great place to live.
